I'm not sure if man of steel was scored by hans zimmerman ( can't be arsed to look it up ) but i found the " music " very much obtrusive .

how a propah film muso feels about what film music should be and i quite agree with him :thumb:

Well I won't be watching the next superman film that's for sure but I agree with his comments. You shouldn't really be aware that the music is there, its purpose is to add to the experience not dominate it. :)

Shouldn't need music if the plot, acting and cinematography are good

The music is supposed to complement the movie not overpower it. I'm not really a modern movie composer buff but some of the older composers were great; John Barry (almost all the Bond movies), Bernard Herrmann (almost all of Hitchcock's films, Jerry Goldsmith (superb for the Poltergeist movie), John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, Time Tunnel, etc, etc)

Just listen to the strings melt into the score:

Plays on the radio or in the theatre rarely have any music and I like a few of them, so music isn't an absolute essential by any means.

Though as Phil says the music can add something extra. I have no idea if that movie I watched last night about Alan Turing had music or not. I suspect it did but I don't remember it, if it was there it just blended in.

Occasionally the music plays a stronger part and that isn't always a bad thing. You may remember the film 'Taxi Driver', which although very dated now is still on my favourites list.

When I think of it I tend to remember Travis Bickle driving through the Brooklyn streets with that very sleazy music playing. Bernard Herrmann wrote it and it conjures up the atmosphere perfectly. Without the music it . . . . well it wouldn't have worked nearly as well. :)

Score by Alexandre Desplat

Taxi Driver was Herrmann's last soundtrack :(
