They rattle on about super Bond cars in lots of articles but apparently the first one, Dr No, was a Sunbeam Alpine.

Now for the day they weren't bad cars, only 80 horse power but fairly light so top speed of 98.6 mph and acceleration from 0–60 mph in 13.6 seconds, which (believe it or not) was considered quite quick then. :)

Apparently they haven't got it, or a similar car, in the exhibition of Bond cars now on.

I watch quite a few antiques programmes and at one time the Corgi DB5 model in good condition with box fetched £100, then later on even battered ones without a box made that. Nutters I thought. Though they seem to be on ebay for £30 quid if you want one now. Can't imagine why anyone would want one though??

Do you mean an Alpine or a model DB5? :D

They didn't actually make many Alpines, about 20,000 over the years. They seemed nice cars at the time.

My Humber Sceptre was about the same vintage and had the same engine but was heavier of course so a bit slower. Still seemed pretty quick at the time. Aided by the Laycock de Normanville overdrive.

They do seem to forget about the Alpine in Bond progs though. Must admit I don't remember Dr No very well - I haven't seen all the films anyways.

They only had a Hillman Minx/Sunbeam Rapier type engine in them.

Several Rootes cars of that era had many interchangeable parts.

007 drove under the crane and the 3 blind mice in the big Yankee job smashed into it, swerved and went over the cliff, then 007 went on to slip the ferret to Zena Marshall.

My old man had a Humber Hawk and a Humber Snipe.
I remember having to take out the front seats, carpets to get at the awkward bell housing nuts and bolts for a replacement clutch to be fitted.

I had a Standard 10 at that time, immaculate.
His sister, my aunt had a Sunbeam Rapier which she bashed up and was in urgent need of transport so I swapped her. She had the Standard fp 7 years, never missed a beat.
My old man got the Rapier fixed body wise and it was perfect.

A few months later a mate of his who was a racing mechanic fitted some special shooters and bits to it and it FLEW.

I got married and flogged it and bought a immaculate Singer Vogue, I loved it.

I remember many years back in about 1962, my dear aunt that lived in the states and her husband that was in the service,he put in for transfer to England (mainly so my aunt could see her family) he had one of those big huge Cadillac jobs, that he crashed! Not suited for Small village roads,he got I'm sure a Sunbeam Rapier.. I can still remember the number plate ! (AGY 31)
