Just finished listening to Shostakovich 10 from the proms, played by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Was okayish but rather bland playing of what is usually such an invigorating symphony.

I have the number ten on vinyl by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy which I remember as much better. Will play it later on. :):

It was first performed a few months after Stalin died. He might not have liked it and put Dmitri into a Siberian work camp.

I'm gonna put some music on and relax. I'm wound up after banging my head against a brick wall trying to educate you two economically illiterate buffoons about how money is created

Having watched an old ep of Lewis the other night where he referred to to a Wagner boxset of LPs which DCI Morse had given to him he said of some music 'It ain't as good as Kernappensbusch'. As Morse has corrected him about the pronunciation I assume he was being flippant. :)

Anyway, I realised that I'd never heard any Knappersbusch Wagner recordings of the ring cycle and pondered buying a copy. Though they seem to be available free on youtube now. This one is Rheingold -

No video I'm afraid - and only in mono from 1957.

I'm about half way through the 2 hours 34 minutes and it ain't my favourite version but sort of okay. :D

For such a twat, he gave the world some amazing music. I've sat through the Ring cycle twice :eek4:
The leit motif approach he used for characterisation is amazing, painstaking work. They filled up two notebooks, I believe, and all he had to do was (all he had to do? :) ) write music around them. So we wind up with 4 "music dramas" totalling around 16 hours. There's not much that can beat Siegfried's funeral music, absolute music right there :splif: The Valkyrie music too. Incredible. There's a motif for the Ring, a sword, Mime the nasty dwarf (similarly treated to the jews by Nazi Germany), every key thing has a motif, some melodic, others rhythmic. Here's Siegfried's funeral music. Heroic music for the hero of the whole cycle:

Play VERY LOUD

Got ' .. . . sings Dylan' on BBC4. Dunno why I'm listening as most of it is pretty dreadful.

Can't say I've ever been a big Dylan fan by any means. Though when Lulu sings Mr. Tambourine Man - well that reaches the depths. That one can be done moderately well though, as the Byrds proved. :):

A mix of really ancient songs that came on at random after my usual playlist on Mixcloud. Really good and refreshing
