As someone who wants to go back to vinyl. Is it REALLY worth buying a record player., decent speakers, and more importantly, if not vital to the answer, building a soundproof shed?

If you are serious, well errr probably not worth it. Soundproof shed ? Well that would take some doing I reckon. :D

Though have noticed a hum, which on investigating, is from the deck's motor (having removed the platter and rubber band). Having looked it up on the net I find I am supposed to run the thing for 48 hours to burn in. Which I suppose I will do. It comes through to the speakers as well as being there direct even when turntable just rotating but connected to anything at all. :(

Found some more comments about noise from the motor. Dunno if it is common but some have returned their decks and one said that Rega sent them a little syringe of oil which fixed it.

I've moved it to the back of my through lounge now and can still hear it whirring away. :( So if it doesn't quieten down it is probably going back, though I'll quiz the supplier about the oil first. Shame as everything else is fine.

I've had about eight or so record decks over the years and none of them has been noisy in itself, though maybe had some other faults. I got a lot of bits and built my own once - that was pretty good actually. :)

Have you ever tried one of the streaming services Diabs? I use Deezer, which is free if you just want it ad free on your PC, if you pay you get ad free on mobile devices and a better quality stream (320K AAC I think). As far as I know there's a lot of classical stuff on there. Might be worth a look :)

Not heard of that one before, will take a look. Though I'm not really short of music to listen to. Radio iPlayer always has plenty to listen to and the Radio 3 streams are 320AAC now. Listening to it now actually.

The turntable thing was just done on a whim really. :):

It is still noisy. :(

After a few hours more burning in it is about half as noisy as it it was, so maybe I was shouting before I was hurt. :) Will see how it is after running for a day or two more.

Depends on what you mean by soundproof. Certaibly won't happen by making it out of the usual shed materials :)

Nah, not yet. Though it gets quieter every day. I think I'll find a suitable oil and put a drop on the spindle, see if that helps.

A bit annoying; like I said earlier I've had quite a few decks in the past and none of them had a noisy motor, so why they can't make quiet ones in 2015 is beyond me.

After running the deck 24/7 for the past few days in the back lounge it got to be almost inaudible from a couple of feet away, so I moved it back into the front and put it on top of my A/V amp and re-fitted the lid. Suddenly got the whine back, bugger.

Though if I set on the tiled hearth and remove the cover completely it is okay again. Bit inconvenient but I won't be playing records very often. I could get the improved silent vibrationless motor they supply as a kit, but won't bovver. :)

So am finally spinnin' the vinyl. :D

It is even better now that I removed the plastic box housing the motor and control board. I oiled the bottom spindle and ran it for a few minutes upside down. Now I can use it when still in place on top of my A/V amp.

I mentioned it on AVForums a few days ago and got told that I'd probably ignored advice on setting it up.

https://www.avforums.com/threads/noisy- ... 1.1976575/

I think I got sent a crappy one but seems to be okay now. Never had this trouble with other decks.

Well I did have a second-hand Beogram (think it was the 7000 model) linear turntable at one time which was super when it actually worked - but I recall fixing the innards quite a few times. :) All the others (including my home-made one) just fuckin worked. :D

Dansette is the second one down. Didn't think they were still made. Though some firm probably just bought the name and makes something which looks similar.

I never had one though knew plenty who did when I were young. I just had tape recorders. :):
