Aged 81, so not too bad an innings, a Salford lad who decided to become a composer when he was four according to Wiki.

I didn't like all of his stuff, not keen on the Scottish inspired toons, but things like his sixth symphony appeal to my ears. :)

Ah, the end of that symphony turns a bit Scottish, I'd forgotten that. Wonder why a Lancashire lad put the Scots stuff in??

I've known about him and heard his music for forty years or more. There are a couple of classical fans on here I think, though they might not like his stuff much - he is an acquired taste. :D You won't hear many performances of his work even if you listen to Radio 3 all day and night for a month, though he has been on "composer of the week" at least twice.

He did get a 4 minute spot on Channel 4 news tonight and will no doubt get a mention on Newsnight.

The next one to go will probably be Harrison Birtwistle - bet you ain't heard of that Lancashire lad either. :): Most of his stuff is crap but he has done a couple of good things. :)

It is a slightly odd name for a lad born in Accrington, where my father's family comes from. :):
