The question to pit grandma against grandpa, great uncle Bert angainst great uncle Harold. The 1960s, was American Music more inovative then that being produced in Britain, despite the hype?

A retrospective view of 60s music from the British will usually have the Beatles bestriding the world as some untouchable Colossus. I'd argue that both the Velvet Underground and The Mothers of Invention pushed music further than any British band of the period, and in the case of The Velvet Underground were much more influential on today's music. Discuss.

It's a good question BC :)

On the American side, they had all bases covered with great pop groups such as The Lovin' Spoonful, the Turtles and the Byrds; Tamla Motown had a brilliant stable of acts and rock was also well catered for with The Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix. Bob Dylan was a massive influence as well.

Certainly The Velvet Underground and Zappa took music into new dark areas, and if Brian Wilson hadn't suffered a breakdown, the Smile album by the Beach Boys may have also pipped Sgt Pepper for originality.

Against that, the UK had some superbly inventive pop / rock bands - The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, The Who, the Small Faces, The Move etc.

Pink Floyd experimented with psychedelia and were very advanced, while Led Zeppelin, Free, Jethro Tull and many others waved the flag for rock.

It's too close to call for me :cool1: :)

Two more for Britain would have to be the Animals and Family, but then the USA comes roaring back with Love and Canned Heat.

Dusty Springfield & Janis Joplin. When you think about it, there was a true wealth of excellence on both sides of the pond in that era.

Taste wise I prefer the British music of the era, but America had some superb stuff going on.

Tamla Motown, the Beach Boys, the Mama and the Papas etc.

Even the boybands had great material, look at The Monkees. What a decade :cool1:

It is a tricky one, I think Love, Mothers, Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, then I put my Union Jack pants on and think Animals. Arthur Brown, Pink Floyd and Bonzos.
