Not much going on so I thought I'd start a new thread. I'm a bit partial to one or two musicals and wondered what people's favourites were!

Mine are:
Jesus Christ Superstar (I've seen it over 1000 times, I showed it to all the kids I ever taught lol)
Rent
Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat (I was in a church production as a teenager so know all the songs!)
Hair
Cabaret
Chicago
The Wizard of Oz
Tommy

Mine are the same as I posted in favourite films..Calamity Jane and the Sound of Music.

Got a soft spot for Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell too, but if I were to go to the theatre for a musical extravaganza, I'd choose the opera instead.

It's coming yet for a' that, that Man to Man, the world o'er, shall brothers be for a' that. (Robert Burns)

Rocky Horror
Singing in the Rain
Grease
White Christmas

Despite many threats, Granny Weatherwax had never turned anyone into a frog. The way she saw it, there was a technically less cruel and much more satisfying thing you could do. You could leave them human and make them think they were a frog, which also provided a much innocent entertainment for passers-by.

I'm more into opera than musicals- strangely, I find it easier to believe a world where everyone sings ALL THE TIME than one where they talk normally but keep breaking into song.

That said, I just saw the movie of Sweeney Todd and loved it.

Cannibal: The Musical (also released as Alferd Packer: The Musical) by the guys who do South PArk is a particular favourite.

But much as I hated The Sound Of Music when I was a kid, I've got kind of a soft spot for it right now.

...do the musical episodes of Lexx and Buffy count? 'Cos they were ace.

Ooh! Ooh! And for a REALLY fucked-up musical, try The Happiness Of The Katakuris by Takashi (Audition, Visitor Q) Miike. It's a pretty feel-good sort of piece, despite the subject matter. And, as you'd expect from Miike, it's very very odd indeed.

Did I hear someone mention Lexx :)
I like Grease 1+2, think 2 is better tho. Always loved Crybaby with Johnny Depp.

Saw this in the paper yesterday "Went to see Sweeney Todd yesterday. Almost didn't make it to the cinema in time. It was a close shave." It had me in stitches.

What a perfect opportunity to say I love your username. Sad git that I am, I have a signed Xenia Seeberg poster on my wall (I used to work at a certain large comics/SF shop in London, and the cast of Lexx came in to do a signing. And in case my Seeberg lechery seems sexist, I should point out that my then-flatmate, who's a girl, came in purely to lech at Kai).

Hammerstein ones - with and without Rodgers
All the Sigmund Romberg ones

Summer Song ( the music of Dvorak's New World symphony set to words - gorgeous!)

Brigadoon
King's Rhapsody
Calamity Jane
Seven Brides
West Side Story
Grease
Cabaret
Fame

Well I guess most of them.

Like Stoatie I love opera and Faust is one of my Favourites - along with La Boheme.

I saw "Faust" on BBC2 with Angela Gheorghiu, hubby Roberto Alagna and Bryn Terfel. It was sublime...and so were they!

I always watch the old musicals on TV: Showboat with hunky Howard Keel, for eg.
Nice that there is still some grace and beauty to be had for the price of a TV licence. ;)
