It's the weekend - let's get Funky!
Are there any FUNK fans at Smeggy's???
Post your favourites here!!!

I'll start with Bootsy Collins - not particularly well known in the UK but a hugely influential musician, and as funky as you can get!

"He could pick up a stick and hit it on the ground, and it'd be funky!" :D
- featuring the great Maceo Parker - remember Maceo and the Macs?

Reminds me of Herbie Hancock's forays into funk on his 2 excellent albums; "Sunlight" and "Feets Don't Fail Me Now" - including the wonderfully sleezy song "Honey From The Jar"

Here are a couple of songs from the Sunlight album:

I didn't spark a debate as to whether Talking Heads are a funk band then?

Aww!! :) I dunno why it slipped through my net for so long. Apologies for that. :)

I dunno if you remember but I started a music subforum called "Smeggy's choice cuts" - I found a guy on Youtube called Vinylmorpher who had uploaded over 500 tunes from this era. All my old favs. not just the funk, but the disco/soul/RnB cuts from everything to Shalamar, Cheryl lynn, Jocelyn Brown, SOS band, Change, Teena Marie, Light of the World, Heatwave, Benson, Gap band, EWF, etc, etc

Vinylmorpher's uploads were great quality compared to the normal compressed artifiavt audio you normally get on Youtube vids, so I started xollecting them in a deddicated forum.

Unfortunately the greedy copyright cunts got his account closed down, so I had to remove the forum here as all the links were dead.

Teena marie!!!

One of my favourite funky tunes is Teena Marie's Square Biz. Amazing drum and bass line!

and although the sound qulaity is shit the talent shines through.. This is the old bird still rocking in 2000. Check out the bass at around 2:00

Another classic.... I need your lovin ...

... a rare occasion where an upward key change ( 4:12 ) is NOT cheesy and formulaic. Grab some alcohol and enjoy 7 minutes and 39 seconds of pure groove and soul!!!

Talking heads weren't a funk band!! blasphemy!!!

I've got two talking heads Albums in the loft. I was lent them by a drummer who temporarily joined our band in about 1980. I never forget it. he was a huge talking heads fan. I'd never really listened to much talking heads, so he handed me these albums saying .....

"Talking Heads! The thinking Man's new Wave!"

...and he was spot on. Great stuff. but not funk!!

Well, their bass player Tina Weymouth might beg to differ. I definitely remember her saying back at around the time of Remain In Light that Talking Heads were the best funk band in the world. It surprised me when she said it, but if you listen to these next few songs you can kind of see what she means...

BTW, Teena Marie's Square Biz - an EXCELLENT song! :thumb:

Here's another "new wave" band that are actually a funk band - without doubt this time. Well, at least for several of their albums anyway.

I Need Someone Tonight

Shack Up

Forced Laugh

I really like this one - I don't know why, but I love slightly weird minimal abstract stuff.
I think this one was probably from the period when they were emerging from under the shadow of their stablemates Joy Division and started getting funky.

Actually IMO those songs prove her wrong.

That's not funk. It's too mechanical, too precise. It's kind of a forerunner to electro and breakbeat. I'm not hearing funk there.

Bootsy collins was interviewed years ago and was asked to define funk. He had his bass rigged up and played some examples saying "It's all about 'The ONE' !"

and what he meant by "The One!" was that the emphasis was on the downbeat of the bar, which had to be precise while the the rest of the was loose and soulfull.

here's a good example....

Even though this is a live band notice how accurate the downbeat of the bar is. on beats 2 3 and 4 things can waiver and get loose but it ALWAYS resolves back to the rock solid downbeat of the bar. On, as Bootsy so brilliantly and succinctly put it, 'The one!'

And even though 'sex machine' doesn't have an obvious emphasised "The one" it's there and that's why it grooves. James brown was notorious for getting very angry at his band if anyone of them missed "The One" :)

Listen through and you'll see what I mean :)

BTW, Teena Marie's Square Biz - an EXCELLENT song! :thumb:

Pure nektar :)
