The Smiths to reunite - could it really happen this time?

Smiths 'closer than ever' to reunion
IT’S the reunion no one thought was possible.
But iconic Mancs THE SMITHS are “closer than ever” to setting aside their poisonous differences for a comeback.
Sources close to the band believe they could headline California festival Coachella in a one-off show next April for a huge pay day.

The Smiths ruled the alternative scene in the mid-Eighties but guitar god Marr’s 1987 walkout signalled the end of their five years as a group.
Then ten years ago drummer Joyce successfully sued song-writers Morrissey and Marr for unpaid royalties and shortly afterwards the quiff-sporting frontman said he would have nothing to do with a reunion.
He insisted: “I’d rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths — and that’s saying something coming from a vegetarian.”

This story is all over the music websites and forums. It seems The Sun is the original source so perhaps we shouldn't get too excited just yet?!

I would be very surprised. It would be quite a turnaround for Morrissey and Marr to agree to it.

I suppose it would be possible for M & M to reform the Smiths with a new bass and drummer. I think the other two need the reunion more.

Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce are still very active in the Manchester music scene. I quite often listen to Andy's radio stint on XFM.

Rourke is a DJ on Xfm Manchester, broadcasting new and classic indie anthems on Saturday nights. He is currently in a band called Freebass with bass players Mani (ex-The Stone Roses) and Peter Hook (New Order) and vocalist Gary Briggs. He organised Manchester Vs. Cancer 2007, which took place on March 31st 2007, and has announced the 2008 gig. He has also been playing bass for Ian Brown on his recent tour.

I've heard Mike Joyce on the radio too. Both speak positively and fondly of Morrisey and Marr and their time with The Smiths (though are never drawn on the reunion question!).

According to some other articles, Morrisey and Marr have comunicated recently in relation to the new Smiths album (The Sound of The Smiths) which is out in November I think. They always had a love-hate relationship in the old days and parted on bad terms.

Well this must have been the shortest ever reunion rumour!!

Rumours that The Smiths were likely to reform for next year's Coachella Festival have been quashed by former band member Johnny Marr's manager.
A story in The Sun newspaper today (October 24) claimed that the four original members were close to signing a deal to perform at the US festival.

However, Johnny Marr's manager has confirmed to Uncut that the story "is rubbish".

Probably a good thing. For me personally, I don't think it would work. See, back in the day, I thought Morrissey was one of the coolest men on earth (and I still think he used to be). These days, however, he's turned into a total prick. Having him front the Smiths again now just wouldn't be the same.

The Sound of The Smiths was released on Monday. I haven't managed to buy it yet as I have only seen the single disc version in shops but the double disc version (Special Edition) has a handful of unreleased songs on it. Anyone heard them yet?

During the 1980s after playing at an RAF base in Germany I was wandering through the club to get a drink from the bar and a woman grabs me and says:

"My son sings in a band!"

"Cool!" I reply and ask "Anyone I'd know?"

"The Smiths!", she says and continues...."I haven't seen him in ages. I think he's gay?"

I could imagine hell freezing before this gig ever happens ..

I loved The Smiths ..

Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon - come Armageddon!
Come, Armageddon! Come!

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey

Hide on the promenade
Etch a postcard :
"How I Dearly Wish I Was Not Here"
In the seaside town
...that they forgot to bomb
Come, Come, Come - nuclear bomb

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey

Trudging back over pebbles and sand
And a strange dust lands on your hands
(And on your face...)
(On your face ...)
(On your face ...)
(On your face ...)

Everyday is like Sunday
"Win Yourself A Cheap Tray"
Share some greased tea with me
Everyday is silent and grey

Loved the girl in that vid an the wonderful Billie Whitelaw
