I was about to ask about this. I always thought the tanks were reusable, but I couldn't see a parachute compartment in that cutaway drawing.


The ET is the only bit they don't use again, not cost effective to reuse them. Somewhere on the bottom of the Atlantic there is a big pile of ET bits.

...along with flight recorders, old bedsteads, rusty bicycles, barrels of toxic waste, bits of anti-establishment people weighed down by concrete and I believe quite a few nuclear warheads accidentally lost in submarine and aircraft accidents.

btw- there was a Discovery program on recently that used CGI to show what draining the ocean would look like.
