I find the theory that it was "all a big hoax filmed on a set in Nevada" preoposterous.

It was filmed in Slough.

Smeggy Notice ....

As nearly every NASA topic is resolving to the Conspiracy theory about the Moon Landings can I kindly request that CT discussion be confined to one thread, i,e the one Diablo started.

The CT discussion is interesting but everything else is getting derailed at the moment..

Cheers!!!

You did in the 'Next shuttle mission 11th July' thread half way down page 5, sorry but just for the record

Yes I know I'm guilty of talking CT in this thread as well

It's easy to let threads drift too far OT, and surely if we realise things are going to far OT then it's good to reign it in and organise things better?

sorry about that ...I do have a fast finger at times ...but half way down page 5 is hardly butting in ....so as a mod tell me the rules ...because I do get confused ....
must one agree with the OP ??....is one allowed a differing opinion ??? I thought I was very polite in answering your question in the other thread .....
I admit to being insensitive at times ....bit of a tomboy ...
maybe we should just have information threads....I mean just ones to read and learn from ?

Right now, as far as I am concerned you can do what the hell you like, I would imagine what's what you were going to do any way

The forum isn't just about rules. It's also about people getting along. Bickering just this side of the rules doesn't make for a good forum.

Heated debate is great. The CT issue is great, when it's not plastered in every thread. Undertones of bad feeling behind posts aren't good.

Let's all have a group hug and get debating again.

Ir must be awesome to get involved in a project like this, don't you think Martyn? I mean, can you imagine the excitement when the first images appeared? I would love to know when the higher res images will be available. It appears to be suggesting sometime in August on the website.

Discovery Channel are showing some new footage at 10pm tomorrow ( Monday night ). I think ti's footage of the preperations rather than the landings themselves though.

I caught th last part of a news report the other night where some guy from NASA was saying they were not going to say sorry for erasing the mater copies of hi-Res footage of the landings as it was policy to erase tapes at the time ( ala Dad's Army ).

So I'm now a bit confused as to which tapes are still available and which have been lost forever

This piece from the Mail on Sunday gives some clues.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's first steps on the moon's surface were captured by a single small video camera aboard the lunar module.

But the grainy images that the world saw in 1969 came from a TV camera pointed at a giant wall monitor at mission control, of a live feed from pictures sent by satellite from Australia to California and relayed by landline to Houston.

The videos were originally stored on giant reels of tapes that contained 15 minutes of video along with 13 other channels of live data from the moon. But in the 1970s and 1980s, Nasa wiped and reused some of the tapes due to a shortage.

***(A shortage of what? Braincells? What idiot even considered it?)***

The remaining recordings have been subjected to state-of-the-art restoring techniques.

Some 15 scenes representing the most significant moments of the three-and-a-half hours that Armstrong and Aldrin spent on the lunar surface have been enhanced.

The pictures are not new, but the quality of the images is. In the original grainy footage, Armstrong's face visor could not be seen. But in the refurbished video not only is the visor clear, but viewers can also see a reflection in it.

Richard Nafzger, engineer at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Centre, oversaw television processing at the ground tracking sites during the Apollo 11 mission.

He said: 'The restoration is ongoing and may produce even better video. The restoration project is scheduled to be completed in September and will provide the public, future historians and the National Archives with the highest quality video of this historic event.'
