Satellite on your head?

Put your crash helmets on, there's a satellite heading towards earth apparently

Heads up! European satellite dubbed the 'Ferrari of space' is plummeting to Earth - and no one knows where the 2,000lbs spacecraft is going to land

A massive European satellite is expected to plummet down to earth Monday - and no can predict with accuracy where exactly its debris is going to land.

Europe's Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer, or GOCE, was just 99 miles above Earth and dropping at a rate of 8 miles per day, operations manager Christoph Steiger wrote in a status report posted on the European Space Agency's website.

‘Re-entry into the atmosphere (is) probably less than two days away,’ Steiger said.

Erm....

Heads up! European satellite dubbed the 'Ferrari of space' is plummeting to Earth - and no one knows where the 2,000lbs spacecraft is going to land

Kluger explained that it is estimated that about 45 pieces of satellite debris, each weighing no more than 200lbs

Lets hope these pieces do weigh less than 200lbs because 45 pieces at 200lbs each makes the entire satellite weigh more than double the said 2000lbs.

With any luck... it will land on Camorons head.

Apparently the surface area of the earth is 510,072,000 km²

The surface area of my head is ( approx ) 0.00000003km²

Therefore the chances if it hitting my head is 17,002,400,000,000,000:1

Really scared now!!!!

And you have actually bothered to work that out?

What are the chances of it landing on your head if you move about really quickly?

Loads of scaremongering being done about this on the news channels.

Of course. :)

Its the backup story because no Jihadists blew anything up today or pissed on any Cenotaphs.. so they will now be shipping in all the professor type interviewees to sit on a sofa cross legged and make technical remarks about how we will narrowly avoid Armageddon but because we will avoid it.. it doesent matter and arent they so intelligent for pointing this out.

Meanwhile in Basra, another 72 virgins are ordered.

Exactly the same chance as if you stand still :)

Better to invest in some really baggy foil underwear that can be stretched over ones cranium then.

Latest prediction maps suggest she will be dropping in on the Thames estuary or Essex in under two hours

On a short pass over the Troll ground station that ended at 21:18 CET (20:18 UTC), while GOCE flew at an altitude of only 122 km, the satellite was still showing an amazing system performance, and dumped highly valuable data to the ground station.

Using these data, that included very accurate navigation fixes along its trajectory, an orbit could be fitted that was used to forecast the re-entry of the spacecraft.

Current estimates lead to a re-entry time window between 22:50 UTC on 10 November and 00:50 UTC on 11 November (23:50-01:50 CET).

The most probable re-entry area lies on a descending orbit pass that mainly runs across the Western areas of the Thames estuary, with a sub-pass error that takes into account the areas of South Essex and in particular the Thurrock region.

ESA will make another attempt to contact GOCE during a Troll station pass, to acquire more science and spacecraft data from an extremely low orbit altitude, and to further reduce the uncertainty in the re-entry forecast.

10 November 2013 - 23:50 Contact with GOCE was made once again from the Troll station in Antarctica at 23:42 CET. The central computer temperature is at 80ºC and the battery is at 84ºC. At an altitude of less than 120 km, the spacecraft is – against expectations – still functional.

Look up! :D

(as you have given up on the lottery, statistically speaking - you have more chance of this satellite landing on your head)
