Xbox One

Anyone thinking of getting one?

Miss Smeggy is a bit of a gamer ( when she's well enough ), but isn't too pleased with the Xbox One so far. A fee to play 2nd hand games, the salvery of having to be connected to the net at least once a day and the always on camera and mic. Seems a bit dodgy to me as well.

I couldn't help but to come out of the woodwork for this one, Smeggy.

Having been in the forum for donkeys years, your conspiracy theories have started to rub off on me a little bit. But I'm not sure I want one of those things in the house - the whole thing is an excercise in corporate greed and unwanted snooping.

I'm sure it's games are good, but like you said, there's several bumsides to it.

Crazy price tag in getting one, I refuse to pay 300 quid for a basic model.
Fees to play second hand games which is downright offensive (I'm a big believer in - if you buy it, you own it.) Games publishers are the greediest bastards on the planet and make MPs look like men of the people.
DRM with it's mandatory sign in via t'internet - why should I sign in to anything to play a game on my own?
Mandatory Kinect always recording me - Gimme my privacy, damnit! What business does Microsoft have in recording me play their consoles?

But it plays games too.

I tell you something, Smeggy. Having been on gaming forums all this time - the Xbone as it's called is going to sail like Titanic carrying monoliths of granite.

(Though you can certainly give anyone watching an eyeful due to the internet porn available with it's internet app. Xbone indeed.)

If you aren't willing to stand behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Same here, I'm happy with my standard X Box 360. Though my only gripe with it is that I have to leave a disc inside the tray when I turn the console off or the tray refuses to open when I turn it back on.

Interestingly this time it's not one of my theories, but from what loads of people have been saying. I don't pay that much attention to Gaming boxes these days, as I haven't been gaming for a year or few now, but I've witnessed loads of chatter on this.

But something I have noticed is that there seems to be a trend for enslavement policies from companies. IOW you can't just buy something and then be allowed to use it as you please, there's some tie in to the company which is required to enable you to continue to sue it.

Adobe recently announced they were making their Creative Suite software ( Including Photoshop ) subscription only and a monthly fee was required to use the software. Photoshop users are furious about this enslavement.. Not jsut about the subscription fee which is ore expensive than actually buying the software, but being tied into the company and software for LIFE if you want to continue to access your files.

A fee to play second hand games is stupid IMO. If you buy the game, you own it and can do what you like with it IMO. What about lending a game to a mate?

I might just get myself an xbox 360 later on this year - they should be a lot cheaper by then :)

There are many things that I could do today. I could in fact help any one of you, but I won't. :)

We also don't know if I would have to pay a fee to play a game EoW also plays - basically having to pay it twice.

Hopefully they are just testing the water with these ideas, and will drop them before release.

Not got an XBox and won't be getting one. Finding out it's a snooper means I really NEVER will buy one

A lot of PC games these days are going through Valve software which appears to be only online. Why would I need to be online for a 1-player game? :chin: Of course, the software peeps are on a winner cos there's fuck all pirated games can do about it thereby reducing piracy figures. Everything is gonna go cloud anyway so that is pretty much the end of piracy for the long term by the looks of it. Windows et al seem to update on a weekly basis too so they're scuppering the pirates too. Had to happen I guess.

Heya Smeggy. Long time, no see, eh? :)
I'll admit I'm more of a gamer now than before, there's probably no better way to unwind after working one's arse off for the day. But the sheer unchecked greed that the games publishers have would make the government taxes look like a church fair.

But most of the greed is care of the likes of Bobby Kotick (don't google him after lunch - you've been warned... ) This is a guy who would charge for cut-scenes in games. Hell, he's managed to get micro-transactions as they're known into games. But it's not enough for them, they want a cut of second hand sales they're not even entitled to by US or British law. Which is where all that guff about charging for second hand games comes from. (Plus having to connect to the internet once a day just to make sure you haven't jailbroken your console or games etc.)

Long story short, one doesn't so much as pay to own a game but pay a ton of money for a glorified rental. If my new stamping grounds at the Escapist are anything to go by - gamers the world over have had a titful of being ripped off and treated like thieves.

As for the Photoshop thing, I guess that's really similar. Though they don't seem to be looking over one's shoulder all the time. But the only answer I can think of to combat this is don't buy it. If the gamers at my new stamping grounds at the Escapist are anything to go by - the new X-box One is not going to sell well at all.

If you aren't willing to stand behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Don't be a stranger now :) :)

Yup "Don't buy it". Adobe are goign to lose a lot of customers. Many many epople are looking for alternatives and it's a good time for those imaging software companies like Corel, for example, to up their game and start producing software that's a serious competition to photoshop. Previously they didn't bother to compete as Photoshop kind of has the monopoly.

It's also a move that's going to drive more people to use cracked software.

I don't know if the Xbox One will be cracked. always harder with hardware

The sad thing is that the company behind them would make so much more money if they simply stopped alienating their customers. Well, if they do continue to treat customers like crap, it's only a matter of time before someone with an ounce of sense will start to cut into the monopoly by treating their customers with a little respect.

I'm of the opinion that if someone is racketeering like this, and provided there is no other competition - steal from those who extort. It's not nice, but if they're not willing to act reasonably and responsibly, they deserve to be stole from. Good business needs to flourish and bad business needs to have the life choked from it, IMO. Hardware would be harder to crack, but some enterprising fellow will find a way, they always do.

I'm certainly interested in how well the Xbox 1 sells as well as sales on Adobe Photoshop in the future.

I'll bet not very much. Certainly not as well as this current generation of consoles. (Which are already too expensive as it is now.)

The official line from Microsoft is that they do all this connection to the internet stuff to know if you're playing a second hand game or a pirated copy.
But news hot from the press says that you will need to connect to the internet just once to register your console. (Why?!?)

But having spent an awful lot of time here in the past has left me thinking why any gamer has to register with these games publishers and console manufacturing companies at all to play something they already bought and own. Something tells me it's got very little to do with used games and piracy but more to do with exercising greater control over something that they sold long ago in order to get profit they aren't strictly entitled to.

If you aren't willing to stand behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Not surprising as they are competing against the PS4 which doesn't require it and is 80 quid cheaper.

At least with the XB1 if you have a trusted friend you can share digital titles, I'm his 'home' console and his mine. Voila you can play each others titles or share cost whatever, we all do it and it works fine and legal.
