BT Forced To Censor Newzbin File Sharing Website

check it out ..... while you can .... http://www.newzbin.com/

Newzbin 2
In a landmark decision, telecoms giant BT has been forced to censor access to file-sharing website Newzbin after the Motion Picture Association (MPA) called for the blocking with Newzbin providing NZB files used to help users download unauthorised copies of films such as The King’s Speech from Usenet.

BT have said they will not appeal the decision and are claiming that this proves that entertainment companies can and should go through the full legal process to get a site blocked rather than threatening ISPs directly, stating in a statement:

It clearly shows that rights holders need to prove their claims and convince a judge to make a court order. BT has consistently said that rights holders need to take this route. We will return to court after the summer to explain what kind of order we believe is appropriate

Others conversely, have noted that the decision will likely allow groups like the MPA to put more pressure on ISPs to block sites, knowing that any court case would be lengthy and that this decision could be used as precedent.

It is interesting to note that this decision was made under the Copyright, Designs, and Patent Act 1988, and not the recent Digital Economy Act (DEACT) – proving to campaigners against the new act that it was unnecessary as well as offering overly severe punishments such as restricting internet access for infringers – something the UN have recently found to be a Human Right.

Justice Arnold ruled that BT must use its blocking technology CleanFeed to block Newzbin, a technology that is currently used to prevent access to websites featuring child sexual abuse. The is distressing for two reason: the slippery slope towards net-censorship; and the technological attack CleanFeed is now likely to receive as incensed pirates and open rights activists will attempt to break the filter. Child sexual abuse is something that everyone agrees should be blocked with CleanFeed widely praised, but using the filter for economic reasons is far more troubling. Could this be the first stop towards companies censoring other websites that they claim may be defaming them, copying them, or any of the other reasons companies that are struggling to evolve blame on the boundary-free connected world.

Very worrying. It starts with this and ends up with wholesale censorship of the net. China's great firewall here we come

indeed.

I checked out Newzbin and all it is, is a site that allows searching of Usenet. You cannot download anything from Usenet using this site.

I remember the day when all ISPs offered a feed to the Usenet Newsgroups. MY ISP dumped Alt.Binaries. bla bla bla years ago. I dunno if there are any newsgroup feeds to Email client anymore.

Anyone still using this method of Web access still?

I still browse some text only newsgroups. Haven't bothered with binaries for a few years.

Not that closing Newzbin will make any difference. There are many many sites doing the same sort of thing. There is no way government can close down all these sites/search engines. Even if they did they'd just pop up again with different url's.

It's the wider censorship that worries me. Of course anyone with a bit of knowledge will be able to find their way around these things. It will however create a two tier internet. The ones that know their way around censorship and those who don't.

How long though, for example before someone on Smeggy's posts a way around these measures (proxy's/VPN's) and then Smeggy's gets closed down because of it.

A very slippery slope indeed.

Boiling Frog Syndrome

That's why the march towards totalitarianism is taking 100s of years.

The debate over huge Net Censorship is a serious issue. However as long as the Ruling Elite can still steer the mainstream debate via their politician puppets and media outlets, then the concerns of the ordinary people can be marginalised into a ineffective dissidence and thus is impotent.

On that basis I don't fear Smeggy's being shut down for any reason.

In terms of 'two tier' I think it's time people stopped viewing the mainstream media as being more credible and truthful than non-mainstream media. Having millions of pounds to set up a media outlet deos not give anyone more credibility that their "News" is anymore truthful than any other source

Boiling Frog Syndrome......Slowly Slowly Catchy Monkey etc.

This has been going on for years in regard of civil liberties.......take a bit more, nobody much notices, take some more, still nobody much notices......rinse and repeat.

In fact people don't just not notice (or care) they actively support it in the name of anti-terrorism (or in this case anti-piracy).

Be careful what you wish for comes to mind :mad1:

I agree.

One of the most disturbing things I ever saw was the mainstream media, the BBC no less, showing a woman interviewed in the streets of London just after the 7-7 false flag bombing, who declared ...

"I'd happily give up my liberties for freedom"

she could have said

"I'd happily give up my freedoms for liberty"

it means the same thing. but this is the indoctrinated state of Zombyism some people are reduced to in this country becuase they absorb it without thinking about it. It's frightening really.

Just before the last election I genuinely heard someone say they would vote for Cameron because The Scum said that was the right thing to do.

That's at least one vote given to Rupert Murdoch, a supporter of the terrorist state of Israel, who isn't even a British citizen. And this person wasn't a lone voice. Millions more are the same.

Yep, people are just blind to the erosion of civil liberties as long as they think it doesn't effect them.

For example a lot people were happy to lock up others for 42 days without charge. When you point out to them such a law could be used against everyone they just don't seem to get it.

I think some people would support a law that locks everyone up to catch all the criminals, providing of course they were excluded.

Can you get here Smeggy http://www.newzbin.com

I can't on Sky. I had to find a way round it even though I've never used it in my life (challenge and all that)

I think all this blocking milarky has given Newzbin so much publicity that the powers that be have totally shot themselves in the foot.

I used to use the Newsgroups ( Usenet ) a lot in the old days .... 1990s. ISPs used to support newsgroups servers in the early days, but slowly dropped them ... the alt.binaries.erotica used to be THE source for porn pics. I sent a really snotty Email to Fresserve when they dropped them. :stomp:

It's not the copyright material they are worried about. Usenet, like the IRC chat servers, is the underground of the Net. It allows ordinary people an Internet facility that's difficult for the Elite to snoop on.

Yes I can get on newzbin ....

here's what the front page says

What is Newzbin?

Newzbin is the Google of Usenet.

Newzbin has simplified the once arcane process of getting files from Usenet and made finding them much easier. We are the number one website for indexing and categorising Usenet with a huge community of users.

Why use Usenet?

Imagine you distribute PDFs of political pamphlets. Usenet is a superior method for sending and receiving them than Bit-torrent or file-lockers. Your ISP and the government can't do deep packet inspection on your Internet connection to see what you are doing: Usenet providers use SSL encryption but you'd need to pay for a VPN service to be protected if you use torrents or File-lockers.

Other users in your swarm, such as the Chinese government, can snoop on your use of torrent to distribute 'Free Tibet' PDFs: no-one can do that on Usenet; also Usenet providers keep no logs of your use.

If you are downloading PDFs using a torrent your speed may be very slow, depending on the the number of peers that make the PDF available. But with Usenet your broadband connection will be maxed out - even if you are the only person in the world downloading: a Usenet provider will typically have many Petabytes of files; as much or more than are available via Bit-torrent, and in more subject areas.

Yes, it's only BT and Sky customers being blocked so far. Prepare for more censoring though as more court orders are issued.

As I say I wasn't remotely interested in using Newzbin until it was blocked and then I had to search for a way round it. I haven't used binary newsgroups since about the year 2000 :hmmm:

Are they going to shut down google as well? Almost every time I use google, I end up with loads of totally unrelated torrent search results. The other day I tried finding a PDF manual for an old piece of kit and I had to go through about 3 pages of useless torrent links before I actually got a proper link. Sometimes i have to specify -mp3 -torrent in search texts to stand a chance of finding what I want. So come on MPA, shut down google whilst you're at it!

Exactly. If I was wanting to find a torrent all I have to do is search on Google for "XXXX Torrent"

Either that or use a custom search for torrents like this...... http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=00384 ... rhhdbygrma

It's not about file sharing, they know that 99.999% of people who download copyright material would never have bought it in the first place, it's about the fact that Usenet is much more difficult to snoop on, and they don't want ordinary people having that facility ...

The daft thing is 99% of people had never heard about Usenet until these court orders. They've totally shot themselves in the foot. They've given it adversing in most of the national press

Indeed. And those who want to exchange material without the Elite snooping on them will know about it anyway.
