Ofcom is to allow more commercial breaks in programmes on public service broadcasters.

While the total amount of advertising will not be allowed to rise at this stage, rules governing the number of breaks in programmes longer than an hour will be harmonised between public service and non-public service channels, effectively allowing the number of ad breaks during longer programmes on ITV, Channel 4 and Five to rise.

"Ofcom is making the changes because PSBs should not face a disincentive from airing longer programmes, especially within peak-times, because of the advertising distribution rules," the regulator announced.

Next spring, Ofcom plans to re-evaluate the rules governing the total amount of advertising allowed on commercial public service channels. Today, it said "there is a strong case for harmonising the regulation of advertising minutage (including both overall amounts and peak-time limits) on PSB and non-PSB channels within the next few years".

ARRRGHHH!!!

There's far too many as it is.

What is really annoying si that now on Sky they put the 1st ad break about 3 or 5 minutes after the program started. I guess the idea is that less people are liable to get up and make a drink, goto the loo, etc just after the program has started.

Also worked out that only 40 minutes of programming can be seen per hour. The other 33%, 20 minutes is ads and trailers. Terrible.

I got used to it over in America, the moment the theme tune has finished at the start you get the first ad break. They don't have ads between the programs just lots during.

I don't care. Rarely watch anything with ads live. Just PVR it and FF through the breaks.

Though when everyone does that commercial TV will die, I suppose.

Or you could go the whole hog and buy TIVO sets. They automatically cut the ads out. (So I heard.)

most of them are patronising and condescending.
a few are amusing--but you have to wade through tons of shitty ones to find a faintly amusing one

I hate it on some channels when you get the same ads in every single break - it's normally that awful woman who is really blooooowwwwwwwted because she has problems with her lower digestive transit. My OH shouts really offensive things at this point! Even the cats walk out of the room

I used to have problems with my lower digestive Transit. Since swapping it for an upper Hob Nob Sprinter though it's been fine.

In the US they have loads of ads for medication, everything you can think of and at the end they have to mention all the possible side-effects, they list them quickly at the end of the advert.
My favourite was for an alternative for viagra at the end of the side-effects list it says something like 'if your erection lasts for more than three hours please seek medical attention'

any bloke who has an erection for more than 3 hours would have fainted on the floor before being able to seek medical attention

p.s.--he would also be very much in demand!

I notice most ads on ITV seem to be for celebrity magazines, bingo and female health products. Does this tell you who makes up the bulk of ITV's audience these days?

I have also noticed these bingo adverts and poker ones, too. I always thought it was illegal to advertise gambling on television.
