Thanks for that Smeggy. :) I had deleted my Facebook account (as much as one can). I have always thought Facebook and Google were rather sinister and exist to glean and use information from people. I only joined Facebook for college communinications in the first place. There was a story in the news recently of someone who had contacted Facebook (under the Freedom of Information Act?) and received a gigantic printout consisting of thousands and thousands of pages of anything he had ever clicked on etc.

There is a very useful add-on for Firefox users that tells you who is communicating with whom regarding your Internet use and it is quite an eye opener! It is called Collusion! Digital Spy uses many companies that track your use for example!

Actually cheers for that chins. :thumb: :thumb: -

There's a way to block any sites on your computer by simply adding lines to the hosts file

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

open the hosts file with notepad and add a line

127.0.0.1 www.website.com

"www.website.com" = the URL of the website you want to block. Many media outlets like the daily mail use one called tynt.com which hijacks your copy and paste function amongst another things.

here's all the rubbish I've blocked so far

127.0.0.1 r1.tcr1.tynt.com
127.0.0.1 http://www.r1.tcr1.tynt.com
127.0.0.1 p1.tcr1.tynt.com
127.0.0.1 http://www.p1.tcr1.tynt.com
127.0.0.1 tynt.com
127.0.0.1 http://www.tynt.com
127.0.0.1 api.Viglink.com
127.0.0.1 ic.tynt.com
127.0.0.1 js.revsci.net
127.0.0.1 edge.quantserve.net
127.0.0.1 tap-cdn.rubiconproject.com
127.0.0.1 cdnlayer.com
127.0.0.1 b.scorecardresearch.com
127.0.0.1 sb.scorecardresearch.com
127.0.0.1 tcr.tynt.com

That collusion add on looks just the business to find out these nefarious marketing sites. I'll check it out

Ok, I'll try and explain in easy steps :thumb:

1] Lets say you want to block the URL http://www.microsoft.com

2] navigate to the folder C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\

3] you'll see a file called 'hosts' it has no extension

4] open it and choose notepad to open it with

5] At the bottom of the file add the line

127.0.0.1 microsoft.com

6] save and close the file

I opened my Get Extensions for Opera and on the homepage it had Ghostery as I went on it. :hmmm:
It's the same as Collusion but for Opera.
Thanks chinchin. :thumb:

I have done this using your list Smeggy. How do I get the exact details to block? Will any website name do? I e.g notice a site called toptable.com. Also I have now lost my Collusion icon at the bottom of the screen and cannot get it back! :stomp:

Yup editing the hosts file wouldn't have affected your add on bar :)

Collusion doesn't work with FF3, and I tried to isntall FF11 today and it wouldn't work at all. back to FF3

I might try that if the above method doesn't work.

Cheers chins. :): I'm just trying that out now - it seems to block lots of stuff nearly everywhere I visit.
