Saddest day in our house was when SKY stopped carrying Tara. The Irish Lottery show must have been devised by mutant, lobotomised, monkeys on acid. Hilarious.

I remember TARA TV was supposed to be a spin off from RTE channels. Plus Comet(RIP) had it on in the Halifax store. It was a intresting tv channel to say the least.

This was TARA was:

Tara Television (or Tara TV) was an Irish cable and satellite channel aimed primarily at the Irish Diaspora living in Britain, it was set up in 1996 and began broadcasting a year later before being finally wound up in April 2002 by the Irish High Court.
The station was launched by a consortium that included Ireland's state broadcaster, RTÉ, and aired a compilation of shows that had previously been aired by RTÉ in Ireland. It was initially carried by a number of cable providers, before being added to Sky Digital on 1 October 1998. The channel's original owners were RTÉ, United Pan-Europe Communications (owned by at the time by Dutch company United International Holdings, now part of Liberty Global) and Riordan Communications (involved in telecommunications companies active in rural Ireland).
Tara Television had an exclusive option to purchase the majority of RTÉ's programming, and this accounted for about 80% of the total programmes broadcast by the station, with the remainder being filled by programmes purchased from other networks. It mainly broadcast news bulletins and current affairs programming, as well as extensive coverage of Irish sport, in particular, GAA. RTÉ made sure that from 16 July 2001, Tara Television was blocked to Irish Sky subscribers as they feared loss of advertising revenue.[1]
It was anticipated that Tara would pay royalties RTÉ to air these programmes, and it was also envisaged that this could eventually be extended to the United States, Canada and Australia. However, Tara was wound up in March 2002 in proceedings brought about by RTÉ, who claimed non-payment of royalty fees from Tara. Tara was placed into Examinership following the proceedings. An examiner, Ray Jackson of KPMG, was appointed and set out trying to place Tara back on a sound financial footing. Setanta Sports offered to take a majority shareholding in Tara and the restructured Tara offered to pay RTÉ all the outstanding money owed.[2] In his report, Jackson stated that RTÉ were not prepared to consider this offer and were pushing for the total liquidation of Tara and therefore the station was taken off the air, three weeks before a deal between RTÉ and BSkyB for transmission of the RTÉ TV channels on Sky Digital to Irish subscribers.
At the time Tara was taken off the air, RTÉ's stake stood at 20% and 80% was owned by UPC, but Tara had acquired debts that exceeding its assets by €22.8m (including loans of €18m from United Pan-Europe (UPC) and €2.7m from RTÉ).[3] At the time of its closure it employed twenty people at its offices in Derry and London.[4][5]
In recent years, RTÉ have approached the issue of overseas broadcasting through the use of its website to stream current affairs and news programmes, and through RTÉ International, the working title of a service which will operate in a similar manner to Tara Television. RTÉ have now gone back on a commitment to transmit the replacement service. They originally promised to have the station on the air in 2009 at an unspecified date. Since then, RTÉ have introduced an online TV catchup service, the RTÉ Player, which enables international viewers to watch a limited number of programmes recently broadcast in Ireland.

My favourite channels are Sky Sports (for the cricket), quite like Gold but it's very repetitive (they could do with buying in some new material), Sky 1 has improved a lot lately with some of their home made comedy being quite good compared to the bought in American stuff, quite like the documentary channels (Discovery Nat Geo etc), although the History channel has gone downhill and shows no History any more (honestly), BBC 4 is quite good, the Crime and investigation channel can be really good.

I also watch BBC1, 2, 3, ITV1 and Channel 4 quite a lot.

Mrs Res likes to watch the Movie channels, Sky Atlantic and Syfy a lot. Some of the shit they show on Sky Atlantic and Syfy :eek4: just not my cup of tea at all, time to surf the net or have a nap when she puts that stuff on :)

The UKTV company which owns services like Yesterday, watch, alibi, gold, edan, really, dave, good food and blighty also home. Are in a confused state at the moment. We've got free services on freeview at the moment Dave, Yesterday and Really. There is a 4th channel available that they own and don't know what they'll put there but we'll have to wait and see what happens in January when it changes on freeview. We've got a new move service called MOVIE MIX and it will be available in January 2013 so we'll see what they'll show, plus its a freeview exclusive too.

Hadn't heard about Movie Mix, hopefully it will be half decent.

Wonder what the 4th UKTV channel on Freeview will be? At worst it will be Dave ja vu (Dave+1), at best Gold, however I think putting Gold on Freeview would upset Sky and UKTV won't want to risk subscription money from Sky imo.

Well Resonance Dave-Ja-Vu is a two hour channel on freeview 2am-4am. GOLD and HOME is a top-up TV pay service on the freeview platform under-subscription service so is SkysportsSD1 and 2 including ESPN SD also anytime tv channels 1,3,5,6.

Movie Mix Freeview only is showing BID PLUS and SPEED AUCTION TV at the moment until january 2013 when it shows something else. There is one film tho on the channel at 3am till around 5am showing one TCM type movie. Well we will have to wait and see. As well as UKTV well see what the company desides to with the channel.

Think our favourite at the moment is FX, but then we're watching quite a bit on Sy-fy and Atlantic.

Maybe Sky will add Atlantic to their Now TV service? I know they are adding Sky Sports at some point and the Now TV service (currently just movies) has already launched on the Youview Freeview/IPTV service.

I only really concentrate on the TV during my insomnia hours in bed, where we have the SKYbox and big TV ( I only have Freeview in my studio where I am in other wakign hours )

On SKY I normally have the documentary channels on, but it's been getting increasingly shit this year with an increased amount of programs about the Nazis and an increased amount of programs about Americans either restoring cars or playing with guns. I've seenb pretty much every program that's been on as most are repeats. I even struggle to find a new episode of Mythbusters so I can ogle Kari Byron's tight box underneath those jeans at a slightly different angle ;)

Even the cooking channels have too many repeats, and I really want to punch Ina Garten ( Barefoot contessa - what a stupid name ). And now there's a billion cooking for Chrstimas dinner programs.

In a word .... ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Agree on repeats Smeggy, gets daft sometimes. I guess there just isn't enough programming to keep hundreds of channels going 24/7 without loads of repeats.

Does the Freeview box need to be re-tuned or will it update itself and add any new channels itself?
