I just hope that this doesn't spread to normal content such as music videos, but I can see it happening.

The new model to be offered by YouTube will apply to as many as 50 YouTube channels, and viewers will be charged $1.99 a month, reported The Financial Times, citing people familiar with the plan. The company has nothing to announce at this time, the YouTube spokesman said.

I very much doubt this will apply to the regular stuff. I've got no interest in subscribing to some premium channel which shows reruns of absurd and shitty American pretty people sitcoms from the 90s and 2000s like Friends, etc which are peppered with hammer drill intensity false canned laughter

Follow the Sky business policy, 'give it to idiots for free until they cannot do without, then screw them for everything start charging for the priviledge'.

As a standalone channel on the Smart TV system, it was always going to ensure payment followed

Smart TV also provide access to user-generated content (either stored on an external hard drive or in cloud storage) and to interactive services and Internet applications, such as YouTube.

Google bought it a couple of years ago I think.

They'll never make the majority of content subscription as most of the users would depart to other services.

I don't think I've ever seen any ads on there.

YouTube will never go subscription based. The revenue comes from adverts. Plus they will target the viewer with ads based on what videos they have watched.

That's no reason not to charge. Look at any subscription channel on UK satellite, they are full of adverts.

I could see music videos going behind a paywall to be honest. If this happened YouTube would aggressively delete unofficial uploads of music. At the moment they only bother deleting stuff if the copyright holder complains.

Obviously cat videos etc won't go subscription, but quite a lot of other stuff might. I know there are adverts on some vids, but how often do people buy anything because of them? My guess would be a tiny tiny percentage.

A french guy who uploads thousands of vinyl rips of some excellent are 70s and 80s funk is always getting taken down and banned from youtube and he just resurfaces a couple of weeks later under a new name and carries on :)
