I thought Sky gave a portion of the subscribtion to the BBC already. Pisses me off paying for my tv licence twice.

I don't see why a Public Service Broadcaster like the BBC should be paid to carry its services when it was recently revealed that 47% of its daytime output is repeats!

I really fucking hate that the TV licence is mandatory. I would prefer it to be subscription or paid for with ads, they advertise as much as other channels but only their own programmes.

Jeez, thanks for the idea Scott. I just happen to be listening to Radio 3 at the moment. There is nothing else similar, Classic FM is rubbish compared to R3.

I don't care much for BBC 3 but I'm sure plenty do. I watch quite a lot of BBC 4 stuff and no doubt that would disappear if it were privatised.

Nah, I vote to keep it. :)

They are playing opera now, Wagner's Flying Dutchman. They have jazz on sometimes plus various sorts of contemporary music.

The morning show is a bit too chatty for my liking, obviously introduced due to Classic FM competition.

All in all it is a good balance IMO and I don't want it buggered up any more. :)

Wouldn't immediately affect my personal listening if they were to privatise Radio 1 & 2 though ;) , but after a while the government would want to get rid of the rest.

In my view a lot of what the BBC is there to do is stuff that wouldn't be economically viable for a commercial outfit. So stuff like Radio 3 is exactly what they should be doing. I'm always amazed when the BBC get into ratings battles. The BBC is there imo to produce specialist stuff that won't get big ratings, stuff that ITV or Heart FM couldn't do because they wouldn't make a profit.

Of course they have to balance it so there is enough of interest so people don't complain too much about paying the licence fee

That said, should the BBC be providing programming for very small audiences wh the money could be put to better use elsewhere?

What would be a better use though? Popular demand is fairly well catered for already I think, they have to balance things out so that it has enough programming for the average user (to justify the license fee) but also enough specialist stuff (to satisfy the charter requirements) for odd blokes like me. :) I like it that they are spending a massive 7p per listener hour on Radio 3.

I think it's fine as long as they have programming that covers a wide range of interests. By that I mean they have Radio 3 for people like Diabs, they have bowls for people that like that, they have documentaries on things that interest others etc. Most important of all though is they have the Cricket on the radio for me when I'm away from the TV :)

Why do we have the likes of Sophie Rawreth, Huw Edwards and Sian Williams reading out 30-minute news bulletins once a day when this could easily be covered by the BBC News Channel?

Totally agree. Especially about the overpaid 'talent'.

Yes, I still get the impression that the BBC is overstaffed compared to other broadcasters. Though maybe the new DG will do something about that. He seems to have cut the massive payouts when senior staff leave.

They do pay some of their 'stars' a lot - but probably less than they'd get at ITV / C4 and in terms of cost per hour? Maybe it is worth it in a way if they bring an audience?

Though I won't shed many tears if they get rid of Sophie Raworth, Huw Edwards and Sian Williams. :)

Sky has got worse. Documentary channels are either re-runs of programmes I've seen a thousand times or American Guns, Sons of Guns, Family Guns, Retard Guns, Freedom and Democracy Guns, God n Guns, Guns, Guns and more fucking Guns.

There are too many channels on Sky showing too many repeats. Another example is Home and Discovery Home & Health both repeating Homes Under The Hammer, and ITV2, Reality TV and CBS Drama showing Judge Judy.

Back in the Sky analogue and early digital days, there was more quality and choice with the channels, and less repeats.

If I had my way I wouldn't watch tv. Well apart from downloaded stuff. You don't need a licence for catch up tv. Only stuff that's broadcast at the time.
