The last couple of months I've noticed that my internet usage (as recorded by Plusnet) has increased quite a lot.

I used to have an 80GB daytime allowance but increased that to unlimited at Xmas - even though I'd never used beyond 60GB. Though in the last few months it seems to be around 120GB, mainly during the day. I don't use it for anything different.

So, a week ago I installed a monitor program on my PC to check usage. For yesterday it shows 250MB, yet Plusnet shows 17GB for Friday. :eek4:

Anything new trying to join my wireless network reports on-screen so I doubt if it is next door nicking connection, though I intend to change the router password anyway to something very difficult. The only other things regularly on there are my smart TV and freeview box - but why would they be secretly downloading loads of GB ?

The connection is a fairly stable 7Mb link but yes it does seem a lot. These are the daily peak-time downloads for one week recently -

8.66GB 215.46MB 2.79GB 190.72MB 10.54GB 20.87GB 187.05MB

I wonder is it just the Plusnet figures which are wrong, maybe I'll raise a ticket with them to check.

Though it isn't actually affecting the speed of anything I want to download and costs me no more, so why am I bothering anyway. :)

Well if someone or something is hacking your connection and downloading Jimmy Savile type material you might haev some explaining to do. Worth investigating I reckon. PLusnet should know what the traffic is

What sort of encryption is your router's wifi using Diabs? If its WEP change it to WPA or preferably WPA2. WEP encryption can be hacked in a couple of minutes by someone with the right software.

I'm using WPA-Personal ( PSK ), which I know was the best I could use at one time for compatibility. Maybe I'll check that it still is. :):

edit: Router tells me it is WPA/WPA2 personal.

Not really my scene Crumbs, though if I suddenly turn queer I'll send you a PM for a list of the your favourite ones. :)

Have changed router wifi password and haven't connected anything other than computer up to it yet, will see if usage drops.

Probably not the best thing to post on a thread about potential internet usage theft/pedo shenanigans.

Didn't the McCanns used to describe their daughter in the same manner? :hyenas: :hyenas:

Still showing excess usage on Plusnet stats today despite only this PC connected and changing password.

I sent a message to Plusnet last night but seems to have got lost in the system so will do again.

Did some speed tests last night and again today, seems to be running at nearly 12 Mbps these days. :):

Can you log onto your Router and see what devices are connected?
I did that with Sky the other day to check my firewall and Port for Utorrent, and noticed it told me what was connected.

Yes, it only shows the PC so I suspect the Plusnet figures are wrong. :)

Unplug the PC from the Net for a bit and see if there's been any increase in usage in the meantime

Not had any problems over the last few days. :)

Have installed this utility to check stuff using the wi-fi and it seems to work pretty well -

Cool, thanks.
Just scanned and I have a D-Link (make of router) unrecognised device and a BSKYB one. (I'm with Sky) so guessing thats normal.
