Europe Could See Beginning Of Two-Tier Internet

Days after a two-tier internet was blocked in the US, plans are afoot for a shake-up of how web traffic is managed in Europe.

Politicians are planning a two-tier internet in Europe - just days after a similar move in the US was blocked.

EU member states are drawing up proposals to allow internet service providers (ISPs) to prioritise specific internet traffic.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the chief executives of both Vodaphone and Deutsche Telekom both argued for rules to allow them to give priority to some services.

Operators often cite emergency services data as an example of traffic that should be prioritised - but many fear that customers will see their traffic throttled in favour of higher-paying individuals and corporations.

I think in this country at least competition should see net neutrality remain. In the US a lot of the country has no competition. If an isp here purposely slowed down Netflix for example, like Comcast did in the US then people would just move elsewhere. It just wouldn't make business sense here.

I'm not sure what competition is like in the rest of the EU, there may be some countries they could get away with it in?

Fast stream internet for those with the cash and slow for those who don't.
In a similar vein, have you heard about subscription for the BBC? It will cost a lot more than the licence fee. Believe me.

My ISP (Plusnet) prioritises things like TV streaming and there used to be a special (more expensive) service for game players - better ping speeds I suppose.

Back when a fast broadband speed was around 1 Mbps there were warnings that the infrastructure couldn't handle any more and traffic would be throttled severely. It never happened (in my area anyway) and I doubt it will happen now. They'll just add more big data feeds to the system.
