Anyone identify this bit ugly caterpillar ?

I spotted what looked like a twig on the concrete near the pond in the back yard - then it moved. :eek4:

I turned it over with a proper twig and it has many sets of legs. The head part (right of pic) has almost an elephant like snout which can expand and contract. What surprised me was the size of the thing - nearly 3 inches long.

They may be common where you live but I've never seen one like this before. :):

Cheers Bryn, that must be it. :thumb: :):

They look fine as moths but not appealing as caterpillars.

Hi all

Thanks for the welcomes!

Wotsit2, I believe the adult you posted a pic of is a Privet Hawk moth (Sphinx ligustri), see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privet_Hawk-moth , the caterpillar is quite different to Diablo's - very green.

If I can work out how to insert an image then I will stick an adult Elephant Hawk up, in my opinion they are even more beautiful than the Privet Hawk, but you can see one here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deilephila_elpenor

I am quite jealous, I have not seen one in around 25 years!

Thanks

Bryn

all you do is find the image you want by using , say google, copy the link for that image and then click on where it says IMG on here and paste the link inbetween [img][img] the cursor is already inbetween those :)
