The New Horizons probe will pass closest to Pluto tomorrow after its ten year journey, though will be out of radio contact at that time. Data will only start to be received at about 2am Wednesday morning though.

The demoted planet is still apparently the largest object in the Kuiper Belt. So any findings may be interesting. :)

It's a planet. It always was a planet and anyone who says otherwise can fuck off :D

Pluto already has five confirmed moons, making it a interesting system regardless of what happens later today. Mercury and Venus have nothing on Pluto.

If all goes well, there will be 15 months of data to send back to Earth based on the fly past. :coffee:

The name of Pluto will live on regardless of status - stuck around long enough to have an element named after it. :):

The Sky at Night takes a look at the project and will have the latest pics from the flyby.

Presented, as usual, by the slightly annoying Chris Lintott and the very annoying Maggie Aderin-Pocock. But probably still worth a watch. :)

SCIENTIFIC DOCUMENTARY: The Sky at Night
On: BBC 4 HD (106)
Date: Monday 20th July 2015 (starting in 3 hours and 15 minutes)
Time: 22:00 to 23:00 (1 hour long)

Pluto Revealed.
Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Chris Lintott present the inside story of NASA's groundbreaking visit to Pluto. This is the first time any probe has visited the dwarf planet and Sky at Night has ringside seats, bringing you the entire story and expert insight into the latest images from the New Horizons probe. Sky at Night celebrates its 750th episode with the most exciting space event of 2015.

Quite a good programme. Lots of info about the mission and results so far. Though there are more questions than answers as yet. May become clearer when more data comes back over the next months.

I wonder who will make such programmes after the BBC is dismantled ?? :):
