I use a mix of lard and beef dripping, each of which cost about 72p per 500g block - it takes about 7 blocks to fill my deep fat fryer to the max line.

I remember the Horizon a month or three back about saturated fat, seemingly it ain't bad for you in moderation. They found something in the lean part of beef which was bad for you though. :)

How long does it last?

Interestingly I read that originally in the old days, the offal ( livers, kidney, hearts, etc ) of the animal was considered the good, most nutritious parts while the lean muscle bits weren't. makes a lot of sense.

I think I last cleaned out and refilled the deep fat fryer about six months ago. I only use it a couple of times a month so it is still good for a while yet.

Doesn't it have a shelf life regardless of how often you use it though?

I can't find any useful information on the life of lard/dripping, it doesn't turn rancid or anything. I just use it until it gets to look a bit discoloured with burnt fragments of crumbs.

Me owd mum used to filter the chip pan lard every now and then so she probably used it much longer than I do.

Here's some chips with battered asparagus and chicken goujons I cooked about a fortnight ago in my old oil -

A lot of chips shops have dropped beef dripping in favour of veg oil. It's just not as good imo. Maybe they'll go back now? I never got why chippies were trying to be healthy, who goes there for a healthy meal

The propaganda was indoctrinating everyone that saturated fats were the devil. They had to follow suit or lose business. I can understand it, but sadly it's just another case of money being the most important thing in society.

Never knew it was on cos I was at the gym! Seriously!

Interesting stuff, they're always trying to scare us with something. You do need an amount of fat to survive but as said trans fats (the yellow fats) are the ones we're always told to steer clear of.

Sounds as if it's a bit like that Atkins diet everyone was going on years ago, they were losing weight and thinking they looked good on the outside whilst inside all the fat was clinging to their internal organs as well as fucking up folks kidneys causing urine infections.

I'll try and watch it tonight or tomorrow on iplayer
